"God is Love- Seen in ‘His Grace’"

Tuesday, April 11, 2006 Mr. C. Pat Lanyon

Character Attribute #11C, 2D.Grace

11 C. Love of God = ‘God seeking the highest good of displaying His own will’

Love = God seeking the very best for the object of His love.

We are studying the word’s in scripture that describe love as attributed to, or from God Himself.

Review:

OT (The Lord’s LOVE, especially in the OT ‘for Israel’)

Jeremiah 31:3 with Strong’s concordance numbers included.

The LORD <03068> hath appeared <07200> (8738) of old <07350> unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved <0157> (8804) thee with an everlasting <05769> love <0160>: therefore with lovingkindness <02617> have I drawn <04900> (8804) thee.

0157 ^bha^ 'ahab \aw_hab'\ or ^bha^ 'aheb \aw_habe'\ this word means here ‘God's love toward man’

0160 ^hbha^ 'ahabah \a_hab_aw\ this word similarly means, ‘God's love to His people,’ but is in a physical context.

02617 ^dox^ checed \kheh'_ sed\ is a special word for a love which God has that is described as steadfast, faithful, loyal, and selfless. It is translated various times in the AV as: mercy 149, kindness 40, lovingkindness 30, goodness 12 among other word less often.

These are the most significant OT words for love.

NT (The Lord’s LOVE as seen principally through His Son, Jesus Christ.)

John 3:16 For <1063> God <2316> so <3779> loved <25> (5656) the world <2889>, that <5620> he gave <1325> (5656) his <846> only begotten <3439> Son <5207>, that <2443> whosoever <3956> believeth <4100> (5723) in <1519> him <846> should <622> <0> not <3361> perish <622> (5643), but <235> have <2192> (5725) everlasting <166> life <2222>.

25 agapaw agapao ag_ap_ah'_o meaning: to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly

Agape is the most frequently translated word for love in the English Bible.

GRACE

Another often used word for God’s love is the word grace.

OT

Noah

Ge 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Heb., grace= 02580 Nx chen khane which means ‘to be gracious, show favour, pity’

It is translated in the AV mostly as _grace 38, favour 26, gracious 2

Moses

Ex 33:13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

Ex 33:16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

Ex 33:17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

Ex 34:9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

Esther (Not just with the king did she find grace, but also with God!)

Es 2:17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Israel

Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

NTThe age in which we live is characterized by this word ‘grace.’

John 1:14-17 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. [that is, abundance– thus it is repeated] 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:6-7 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Applications [1-3]

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, [1] denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should [2] live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 [3] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [is this not prayer principle 2A, Anticipation: ‘Thy kingdom come?’] 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

[4-5]

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, [4]singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Col 4:6 Let your [5] speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
