Prayer Principle 5A. Confession 2B. Doctrine of 4C. Forgiveness

Review

The Meaning of Believing is

to support, confirm, be faithful, uphold, nourish; to be established, be faithful, be carried, make firm; to stand firm, to trust, to be certain, to believe in

Last time we studied the aspect of believing God when He makes promises about removing sin’s impact upon the believer. We also saw that mere confession alone does not produce complete forgiveness, cleansing and blessing which are the full results of sin’s proper confession.

We consider today the first of three significant things God does when we confess and forsake sin. Forgiveness can be viewed as restoring the vertical line between the believer and God. Like we said last time, it is important to believe that God will do what He says He will. All other thoughts are really lie-thoughts, and they should be immediately discarded!

From the Prayer Notebook:

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

5A. CONFESSION – As I have kept short sin-debts by immediate confession of sins You have revealed, I now pause to examine my heart further for wrong attitudes. As You convict, I will once again make confession of my sin and remember it's results. I will then show a forgiving spirit to others.

2B. The Doctrine of CONFESSION – Today I agree with You LORD that I have failed in the particular way(s) that You have revealed to me. Now I...

...

PS 103.12 3C. BELIEVE – that this sin is now removed from me. I will continue to renounce it and trust your Word.

*RO 5.9 4C. *Am FORGIVEN – and thus my offense is removed completely.

Romans 5:9

Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

In God's courtroom, "forgiveness" means full acquittal. [In our outline the star (*) indicates a work of God, not of man.]

Verses Affirming the Results of Forgiveness:

bullet1Co 6:11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
bulletForgiveness results in justification -judicial removal from guilt, sanctification -being set apart from the sinful life-style and its appearances and consequences, and washed -the removal of soiling caused by sins is completed [To be fully discussed next lesson].
bulletRo 6:18-19 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
bulletRo 6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
bulletWe are put into a voluntary slave relationship with a master commanding us to do righteousness.
bulletEph 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
bulletWe are enabled as if given a new life to do righteousness, much like a prisoner receiving a pardon and placed into a society ignorant of any of his past life.
bulletEph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
bulletA forgiven life can be as easy – with God’s help – as a child walking on a sunny pathway, fully able to see every obstruction and danger ahead.
bulletTit 3:4-6 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,
bulletTit 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
bulletTit 3:6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
bulletKindness, love and mercy comes to abundantly save me from sinful behavior.
bullet1Pe 4:2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
bulletI am able to live "in" the will of God all the rest of my life while in my body.
bulletHeb 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
bulletRo 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
bulletForgiveness gives us full [re-]assurance of faith (of our salvation), and a clear and guilt-free conscience. (See also 1Pe 3:21)

Discussion:

bulletHow can I believe God has truly forgiven sins I have confessed and forsaken?

Applications:

  1. I will quote a verse to remind me God forgave me when evil reminds of my forgiven fault!
  2. I will change the subject, or ask to be excused, when others remind me of things for which I have already been forgiven!
  3. I will substitute praise to God for times I am tempted by remembrance of past forgiven sins.
  4. I will patiently wait for their forgiveness when others do not give me pardon – knowing God Himself forgives me fully.
